Our binchotan charcoal filters last about 3 months if you’re filtering 1.1L (37 fl oz) of water, or until you can taste the difference – at which point you should recharge.
Follow our easy guide below for instructions, it only takes 10 minutes.

Our quick guide
Once you’re followed these 3 easy steps, your charcoal will last another 3 months.
Step 1: Remove your charcoal
Be careful with glass products, for example our Eau Carafe, and ensure you empty any excess water, and slowly tip the charcoal stick out.
Charcoal is an incredibly dense material, and dropping it into a glass bottle could cause the glass to crack.

Step 2: Boil for 10 minutes
Place your charcoal in a saucepan on a rolling boil for 10 minutes. This process draws out 3-month’s worth of impurities and leaves it as good as new, ready to filter again.
Once finished, remove the charcoal with a pair of tongs and leave to cool. Take care as it might be hot.

Step 3: Ready to go
Your charcoal can now be used to filter water for another 3 months! Simply place it back in your bottle or jug, fill with water and let sit for at least 1 hour to maximise its filtering abilities.
Take care with glass products. Make sure you fill with water before adding the charcoal. If you’d like to use our charcoal filters in other reusable bottles, we also have an Active Charcoal + Coil, which will hold it in place while you use it.

Once you’ve used your charcoal filter for another 3 months, it’ll be time to replace it. But don’t worry, there’s no need to throw out your old charcoal. There are plenty of secondary uses for this amazing material around the house and the garden.
